"Money implies poverty"[1] (or "money is a sign of poverty"[2]) was a Culture phrase reflecting its belief that money was an inefficient means of rationing[3] that caused poverty.[4]

The post-scarcity Culture did not use money. Its productive capacity and system of distribution exceeded the needs of its people.[3]

Money was associated with the Age of Scarcity.[5]
