Lededje Y'breq was a Sichultian Intagliate, a member of a caste that has been genetically altered to display tattoo-like patterns on all parts of their body, both external and internal.

She was owned by Joiler Veppers for his personal enjoyment, until her demise at his hands.

Background[]

Her father, Grautze, was a friend and business partner of Veppers. After Veppers manipulated a business deal to bankrupt him, and his wife was sentenced to receive Intagliate tattoos, he committed suicide. His sperm was used to fertilize his widow, and his daughter, Lededje, was altered as an embryo to become a full Indented Intagliate.[1]

Y'breq traveled back to Sichult on the Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints, an advanced and "very slightly psychotic" Culture warship. In hot pursuit was Yime Nsokyi, a Culture agent tasked with preventing Y'breq from killing Veppers. As they and their ships arrived, things came to a head.

The Culture agents colluded to arrange that the attack on Veppers' estate successfully destroyed the Hells, while simultaneously appearing to attempt to stop the attack. They also conspired to ensure that Veppers' secret deal was revealed. Veppers himself was at the estate's mansion during the attack, where Y'breq found him for the final, personal, showdown.
